The car coat was made for the early days of driving: short enough to sit in, long enough to cover a jacket, clean enough to wear straight into town. It has since become one of menswear's quietest classics — a three season coat that goes with everything.

Our new version is longer, more relaxed and hides plenty of detail. And it is made from a cloth with a history of its own.

The cloth: Ventile® was developed in Britain during the Second World War, for pilots flying over the North Atlantic. Long-staple cotton woven so densely that the fibres swell when wet and close the gaps between them. It breathes when dry and seals itself in the rain.

Ours is organic cotton in a 2/1 twill with a soft, slightly peachy hand and a fluoro-free finish. Made for light rain and everyday wear, all year round.

The details: A hidden storm flap, for when the weather turns, adjustable button cuffs to close out the wind, slanted welt pockets and three interior pockets, a back vent for freedom of movement, finally a half-lined interior with slippery viscose sleeve lining.

Wearing it: Over a shirt in autumn, over a heavy knit through winter, open over a T-shirt in spring.

When it needs mending, we repair it for free.
