THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO OUR MERINO KNITS

Merino wool is often touted as one of nature's wonder materials. And for good reason: It's soft, strong, thermoregulating and odor-neutralising - properties directly inherited from the sheep wool mother nature designed as protection against the elements. As a result, Merino wool is low maintenance - wipe of any stains on the spot, air the garment out and let it rest in-between wears.

THE MERINO SWEATER

The classic crew neck, distinguishable by its ribbed neckline, cuffs and hems - and the perfect fit. Made from a 2/30 NM 18 gauge knit, it hits the sweet spot as an all-year essential.

THE MERINO WOOL POLO

Here, we use 2/37 NM yarn - slightly finer than the crew neck - for a lighter 24 gauge knit - allowing it to subtly drape and lay soft on the body. The crisp collar, tonal mother of pearl buttons and french placket dot the I's and cross the T's.

KNITTING CLASS 101

With the same fiber, our mill in Biella, Italy, develops different yarns to suit the unique properties we want to achieve with each knit. The yarns are described by yarn count (NM) and ply. Yarn count explains how fine the yarn is, more specifically, how many kilometers a yarn could cover with one kilogram of yarn. The higher the yarn count, the finer the yarn, the further one kg gets you. The ply determines how many strands of that yarn are combined to one, thickening and strengthening the yarn.

NM 2/37 is a 37 yarn count yarn, plied twice.

Next up, we knit these yarns on flat-bed knitting machines that produce entire panels - front, back, sleeve, neckline or cuffs - that are then linked together. There's no cutting or sewing involved, and there are no off-cuts or waste. Our knitters use different knitting machines, depending on the gauge we want to achieve. The gauge describes how many yarns per inch of knitted fabric we achieve.

12 gauge: is a fabric with 12 yarn rows per inch.

So the finer the yarn, the higher gauge we need and vice versa. It's all about finding the exact right balance of yarn finess and tension in the knit to achieve the right fabric, for the right garment. In the product team, we call it "oumph" - it's that sensation of how the garment feels when you run your hand over it, how it drapes, stretches and goes back with each wear.

Made from the same 2/37 NM yarn and 24 gauge knit as the polo, The Roll Neck protects the neck against unpredictable elements, while consistently giving off a calm and sensitive vibe.

THE MERINO ZIP CARDIGAN

Blurring the lines between outerwear and knitwear, this piece is made from a 2/30 NM yarn knit to a chunkier 12 gauge cardigan knit. The collar and bottom hem are double-layered to keep their form, while the cuffs are single-layered to slip on and off with ease.

THE MERINO HALF ZIP SWEATER

Introduced in 2023, this is our latest addition to our merino line-up, and like all of them, it effortlessly threads the spectrum between casual and formal. It sets itself apart from the rest with a thick, smooth fabric made of TWO 2/30 NM yarns, plied together, and knit to a 12 gauge plain knit that's smooth and substantial.

MERINO WOOL FARMING

When managed right, Merino wool isn't just precious - it's incredibly smart: It's renewable, bio-degradable, recyclable - and working with the right farms, it's part of local ecosystems, rather than infringing on them. That's why we work with only handful of Argentinian farms that adhere to Nativa and RWS standards, being as protective of their communities and local environments, as they are of their pedigree.

Taking things a step further, this year we're looking to partner with our merino sourcing coalition, Nativa, to support the transition of our farms to regenerative practices. With the wool calendar taking about a year from shearing to knitting, we'll touch base on this exciting development next year.
